Using traditional tapestry techniques, Erin M. Riley crafts intimate and erotic images. Juxtaposing personal photographs, press clippings and images found on the Internet, the artist fuses memories, fantasies and traumas. Exploring experiences of vulnerability, she probes the fears and anxieties that burden the search for personal identity. The Hidden Crisis, the artist’s largest tapestry to date, features an open and closed door that stirs diverse emotions in the face of mourning. Why Now ? depicts the artist burning a photograph of her younger self, while I Don’t Remember overlays various traumatic images from her memory, in particular one of a car accident.
