Biography
Simone Fattal was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1942. She studied philosophy at L’École Supérieure des Lettres in Beirut and then at the Université de Paris-Sorbonne in the 1960s. She began painting in 1969 upon returning to Beirut and held her first exhibition at Gallery One in 1973. In 1980, she moved to Sausalito, California with her partner, Etel Adnan. There, she founded the Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house dedicated to experimental poetry, prose and translations. In 1989, she enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute where she developed a practice of sculpture and ceramics. In the early 2000s, Fattal relocated to France with Adnan. Since 2006, has produced works in Hans Spinner’s ceramic workshop in Grasse while also making a return to painting. Her recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Sharjah Art Foundation (2016), MoMA PS1, Queens, New York (2019) and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2021). Simone Fattal currently lives and works in Paris.
