This three-fold journey through the history of dance includes Jiří Kylián’s enigmatic Bella Figura, Trisha Brown’s lively Set and Reset/Reset and Jan Martens’ mischievous Period Piece. These works are just like the Ballet: skillful and adventurous.
Treacherous paths to ideals, energy flows, the necessity to come out for air, deep-rooted loneliness…. The bodies put in motion by dance reflect our inner tensions. Each of the three pieces of this programme are an illustration of that state. The waltzing of chiaroscuro shots in Bella Figura by Jiří Kylián reflects social and artistic representations, shining light on the beauty of our flaws. The rapidly infectious glee displayed in Set and Reset/Reset by Trisha Brown is a celebration of life as an endless cycle of metamorphosis and reconfigurations. To conclude, Jan Martens’ solo Period Piece conveys the resilience and creativity deployed to face the instability caused by the multiple crises our society is going through.
