After a career as a press reporter, Luo Dan embarked on artistic projects, forsaking his digital camera for analogue technology. As a road photographer, he has travelled across China from north to south and from east to west, photographing the changes that have taken place in his native country as a result of globalisation and capitalism. His portraits and landscapes reveal the poetry of everyday life in a country riven by contrasting realities.

Far from the vast megalopolises of China, Luo Dan photographs rural landscapes, using soft, natural colours and striving to convey a sense of sincerity and simplicity in his shots. In an exploration of the strength of tradition, he depicts a family in the depths of the countryside; his focus is on the paternal bond and the expressions of tenderness that link the two individuals. March 9 2006, Three Gorges Zigui Hubei depicts two generations confronting the sheer immensity of the horizon and the water. The poetry of this image of hope resonates with the title of the 17th edition of the Lyon Biennale, “Les voix des fleuves Crossing the Water”.
