Echoing his own personal story, Edi Dubien explores the social, psychological and emotional constructs of the individual, which are sometimes at odds with conventional discourse and imposed patterns of life. His drawings and watercolours conjure up images of flora and fauna and depict people — from childhood to adulthood — reduced to silence by the violence of a society that respects neither difference nor the environment. Edi Dubien’s work is a sensitive dialogue between humans and nature. It invites the viewer to recognise the importance of accepting our own difference and showing respect for others. Away from the noise of the world, Edi Dubien’s work cultivates an intimate relationship with nature and forges new alliances between species. Teenage bodies merge with flowers and branches, birds and insects. Human beings slip and slide between genders and realms in a flow that is accentuated by the fluidity of the drawing. Plants, animals and young men come together, conjuring up hybrid loves within sensitive, caring ecosystems. Edi Dubien’s drawings, sculptures and ceramics create a space of serenity and resistance for beings in a state of constant evolution.
