Chourouk Hriech’s compositions combine architectural and landscape elements with plant and animal motifs in graphic narratives inspired by the history of places old and new, real and imaginary. Working in black and white, Chourouk Hriech draws what she calls her “landscape stuff”, whether it relates to urban areas or vegetation. With precise lines in Indian ink or gouache, she traces the history of “symbolic cities”, using multiple crosssections, effects of scale and perspective. Whether on paper, on walls or on objects, her works create a hybrid universe where forms, cultures and eras merge, blend or coexist.
Entitled Terre d’ailes et lignes de ciel (“Land of Wings and Lines of Sky”), Chourouk Hriech’s in situ murals at the park LPA Saint Antoine alternate images of imaginary cities and skies filled with birds from the four corners of the globe. Her work explores the eclectic beauty of the planet in black and white drawings of urban and rural landscapes, and coloured photographs of many species of migratory birds. Symbols of soaring flight and freedom, these creatures become travel guides in environments that know no borders, where earth, sky and living things coexist in harmony. Terre d’ailes et lignes de ciel is an invitation to escape to another world, encouraging us to rediscover our feelings for nature and architecture.
