Exhibition "Vies Tranquilles...?" - Isabelle d'Assignies
We must salute the perseverance and mastery of Isabelle d’Assignies. Perseverance, because without giving in to the temptations of fashion and current tastes, she has managed to make the presence of her art known. Her works of art consequently inscribe in contemporary art - emerging art, as is purposeful to say nowadays, the magnificent and captivating vision of their still beauty. These forms, these white ‘realities’, embalming fruits of the earth under the layers of astringent and therapeutic waxes, are timeless, protected from rot, decay and dust, where they will not return. They are there for an eternal present in their milky light of spring-like dawn. The strength and openness of such works of art, which are not “still life” but rather “still lives” in the continuity of their abeyance in time, are the results of Isabelle d’Assigny’s perfectly mastered experience and of her determined quest for an intelligent perfection. For our enjoyment.
Bernard Ceysson, former director of Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and of Musée d’Art Moderne, St Etienne , in Isabelle d’Assignies, Still life II, 2008.
