“Writing down the unnameable. Embrace the unbearable. Najah Alboukai's art stands out. And the confrontation leaves you speechless. The slightest word, the briefest comment stays in the throat. What can I say without shamelessness?” Jérôme Godeau
The work is obviously out of the ordinary. Cruelties and inhumanities, Najah suffered them in the prisons of Damascus like so many other of his compatriots. Locked up and tortured several times between 2012 and 2015, in center 227 of the Syrian intelligence services, he witnessed the worst of horrors. He manages to escape and reach Lebanon, then France in 2017. He is now working to bear witness to prison hell as did Goya or Music before him. Born in 1970 in Homs, Syria, Najah Albukai studied successively at the Beaux-Arts in Damascus, then at the Beaux-Arts in Rouen and returned to live in Syria where he taught drawing and devoted himself to his creations. Until July 2022, he was a resident at Casa Velasquez in Madrid where, always faithful to the drawing and engraving of which he is a master and to his personal experience, he continues his work with a new artistic breath. A journey of life. A book on his work will be available in October and several events will be organized in Lyon to meet Najah and make him known. At the same time, meditative works by the artist Gérard Breuil will be presented at Fareins.
